Scraps and Quilt Alongs

Eight of the 9 backings I prepared this week are for scrap quilts – one from a box of very vintage scraps purchased on ebay, one from another ebay box of cool (blue green purple) scraps, and six from the seemingly endless accumulation of general scraps. The ninth is for this plus quilt top, which Hubs has deemed boring. He’s not wrong, but I like it.

The plus quilt top was for a quilt along. I never do quilt alongs, especially mystery quilt alongs (I hate surprises), but for some reason this summer I did TWO. The second was Rachel LaBour’s Parsnips quilt along, because it uses even smaller scraps than the 8 other tops and because I just love the look of this pattern. The sashing just about did me in, though. So. Many. Triangle in square blocks for the four point star points. Seven pieces for each little strip of sashing. And my quilt is larger than Rachel’s pattern, so I had over a hundred of these. I FINALLY finished the sashing yesterday. Mercifully, assembling the rows is going quickly, so I should be able to finish this top today.

If you don’t like “All In” type scrap quilts, my version is probably not your cup of tea, but I’m liking it very much. But if I make this pattern again, I will substitute something like friendship stars that requires less piecing.
